Explorer's Way, south to Adelaide

This seven-day Untamed Escapes tour starts in Alice Springs, or picks up at Yulara, and drives south to Adelaide with a bed every night, including an underground motel in Coober Pedy. It gives you Uluru and Kings Canyon first, then a full afternoon of Coober Pedy sights, without a night in a swag.

Explorer's Way: Alice Springs to Adelaide

About this experience

The southbound Explorer's Way leaves Alice Springs early on day one, drives about 510 km via Erldunda and collects Yulara guests before entering Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You visit the Cultural Centre and watch Uluru at sunset. Day two is sunrise at Kata Tjuta and the Valley of the Winds, then a free afternoon. Day three starts with sunrise at Uluru and the 10.6 km Base Walk before the drive to Kings Canyon, and day four climbs the 6 km Rim Walk past the Lost City domes and the Garden of Eden.

Day five brings you into South Australia via Marla, with a stop at Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park on the way into town. In Coober Pedy you tour Old Timers Mine and visit Josephine's Gallery & Kangaroo Orphanage, then settle in underground at the Coober Pedy Experience Motel. The Coober Pedy Experience Motel is an old opal mine, worked from 1918 into the 1960s and turned into a motel in 1990, per its South Australian Tourism Commission listing. The last two days run south to the Arid Lands Botanic Garden at Port Augusta and Quorn, then Warren Gorge, Wirrabara's silo art and a tasting at Skillogalee Winery in the Clare Valley, reaching Adelaide in the early evening.

Meals are not included, so plan for every breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks and drinks. It is a new listing with no reviews yet. You get five nights in twin-share rooms and one in a multi-share dorm, the guide, the vehicle, all activities and park fees. It needs four people to run, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before keeps it flexible.
