Adelaide to Uluru: 7-Day Outback Camping Tour

About this experience

Coober Pedy is about 850 km north of Adelaide, and most people only reach it once, on the way to somewhere else. This tour makes it the middle of the story. Untamed Escapes leaves 91 Franklin Street in Adelaide before sunrise and spends two days in the Flinders Ranges first: Wirrabara's silo art, the walk to Arkaroo Rock with its Adnyamathanha rock art, a swag night at Wilpena Pound, Wangara Lookout, the Jeff Morgan Gallery in Hawker and a second night at Warren Gorge, where yellow-footed rock wallabies live.

Day three is the long push north, with a stop on the white salt crust of Lake Hart beside the Stuart Highway. In Coober Pedy the group visits Old Timers Mine to learn how opal was mined and how people lived underground, and you get the chance to try noodling, sifting the spoil for opal chips. That night you sleep in a 5-share underground dorm at Radeka Downunder. Next morning the road runs north past the Dingo Fence and through Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, the banded mesas the town is famous for, before you cross into the Northern Territory. The last three days take in the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, sunset at Uluru, Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta and an Uluru sunrise with the guided Base Walk.

It is a camping trip with long driving days. You bring your own sleeping bag and pillow, help around camp, and need a moderate fitness level for walks of 3 to 12 km on some days. Most lunches and three of the dinners are on you, including dinner in Coober Pedy. In return the price covers the guide, the vehicle, accommodation, all activities and every park fee. Guests rate it 4.9 from 22 reviews, and free cancellation runs up to 7 days before departure.

★★★★★

Super nice tour!!! Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, Kings Canyon, Uluru and Kata Tutja all I wanted to see at a good pace. So everywhere enough time to see everything. In addition, great walks and a great guide, who also cooked delicious food at the same time.

It was an incredible experience, exceeding our already high expectations. Our guide, Hannah, was fantastic; she shared her passion and knowledge with us. The places are magnificent, and sleeping in swag is something unique. Highly recommended!

A really valid trip. An experience for life. You see a lot of nature and our guide Dan knows a lot about Australia and its original inhabitants/owners. [...] Sleeping in a swag seemed really challenging at first. But it is really true: you get used to it very quickly and then you really sleep under a beautiful starry sky.

Once in a lifetime experience to see incredible parts of the country. The tour is very well operated and we didn't want for anything the entire time! The right amount of challenging and many many memories to take with us.

Tips before you book

  • Pack a sleeping bag and a pillow. Neither is supplied, and the listing also asks for a towel, a torch, a sun hat, closed shoes and a reusable water bottle.
  • Bring layers in winter. Bureau of Meteorology figures put Coober Pedy's July average low at 6.3°C, and guests say nights in the swag get cold.
  • Carry cash or a card for dinner in Coober Pedy. Only breakfast is included that day, and the town has several places to eat near Radeka Downunder.
  • Keep your opal chips small and your hands gloved. Noodling at Old Timers Mine is part of the visit, and our noodling guide explains what to look for.
  • Pack light: bags are limited to one soft bag of 15 kg plus a small piece of hand luggage, and the tour needs four people to run.
